ZANESVILLE, Ohio – The countdown to summer reading and fun for all ages at the library has already begun.

The Summer Reading Blast Off event at the John McIntire Library takes place this Saturday, June 1st from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. This is a chance to register for the annual Summer reading program. The theme this year is “A Universe of Stories,” in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. Summer Reading Blast Off will include lots of crafts, games, and activities for the entire family.

“We will be having moon toss rocks. We will be having face painting. We’re going to be grilling out. There will be lots of activities going on and prizes. And everyone who signs up for our summer reading program will receive a backpack that day,” said Outreach Services Manager, Beth Brown.

The Summer reading program is an interactive way to interest children into reading, discovering, and creating during Summer break. Every week, kids will get involved with things like learning to use a telescope to constellation string art.

“We do our Summer reading program every year, and it’s a great way to develop literacy. And keep a Summer slide from happening. A lot of children experience a Summer slide when they’re not in school and they’re not involved with reading. And the library has numerous fun things going on this Summer,” Brown said.

All other libraries in the Muskingum County Library System will kick off their Summer Reading Blast Off events the following week. For more information visit the Muskingum County Library website, www.muskingumlibrary.org.
