STEM Activities at YMCA Day Camp

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – Kids explored STEM activities at the Muskingum Family YMCA day camp.
STEM learning is coupled with real life lessons where science, technology, engineering, and mathematics can be applied. At the day camp, the kids did STEM activities with animal handling such as general identification of animals, learning about genetics, and even a STEM challenge of figuring out the most cost efficient way to transport animals.
“They’ve got a budget sheet and they’ve got some supplies up here. And they’re going to be putting together the most economical way to move those cattle,” said 4h Educator, Trevor Tom.
Tom mentioned that STEM activities, such as the animal handling challenges, gives kids the chance to ask questions and create solutions on their own.
“It’s really important to get them in here over the Summer and to keep practicing those skills and to make them start asking questions. We can do a lot of society if we can get kids to ask questions. And come to a solution on their own, and that’s going to be the important part here today. Can they develop a solution, and then when that solution doesn’t work, can they find a way to redesign and keep going?” he said.
Camp members learn about STEM every Tuesday at the YMCA day camp with upcoming activities such as occupational therapy and harvesting grains.
