ZANESVILLE, Ohio – A local school is undergoing a major makeover that will include safety improvements.

The Muskingum County Starlight School has begun a $2.67 million project of renovating the school building and their workshop building. The project is being funded through local levy dollars. And APG Architects is in charge of all renovations.

“We wanted to make it more accessible for students to enter the playground. We wanted to make sure that we had better compliance with all the safety measures as far as homeland security, an active shooter. We train all of our staff and now we were getting to where we needed to make sure our building had a better security,” said Superintendent of Muskingum County Board of Developmental Disabilities.

Project Manager for APG Architects, Cole Ryan said the project revolved around health and safety for the students. Renovations include a new flooring system, paint, new windows, and other upgrades.

“All the hazardous materials been removed from the building. New universal flooring throughout. All the plate glass windows have been replaced with thermal tempered glass. We have a new roof. Full new HVC systems. Some handicapped and security upgrades have also been made,” Ryan said.

The project is set to be completed on August 16th.
