High Voltage Demonstration at Safety Council Meeting

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – A local electric company featured a demonstration to the Zanesville Muskingum County Safety Council group Wednesday morning.
The Guernsey-Muskingum Electric Cooperative was at the Safety Council meeting demonstrating the importance of high voltage and electrical safety. The electrical experts explained the safety equipment they work with on a daily basis such as fiber glass sticks and rubber goods. The demonstration is a power lines presentation where the electrical experts produce 14,000 volts to show the different effects of their safety equipment, and to teach them about the hazards of the power lines.
“The big thing to push for the public is to stay away from it. If it’s on the ground, you don’t know if it’s energized or not. And so if it’s down, just stay away from it. That’s the best advice anybody can take is just stay away from it,” said Guernsey-Muskingum Electrical Cooperative Crew Leader, Blake West.
The Guernsey-Muskingum Electric Cooperative holds high voltage demonstrations at schools and safety councils to keep the public informed. Safety Council has a purpose to promote workplace safety through education and training. They hold meetings like this each month where the group is presented on a specific health, safety, or workers comp topic.
“The advantage for the businesses, a safe workplace is a productive workplace, which is a more profitable workplace. That’s the importance of Safety Council. So each month we have different topics but all related to safety and wellness in the workplace. And because of these folks doing this, not only they learn safety, but they’ll get a discount on their workers compensation cost,” said Chamber of Commerce President, Dana Matz.
