The Wilds had 2 endangered species babies born in a week

Giraffe Calf

CUMBERLAND, Ohio – One week has passed since the birth of a rhino calf at The Wilds and Friday morning a giraffe baby was born. making it two great additions for The Wilds in just under a week.”

People have come from far and wide to see the two newborns at The Wilds. Vice President, Jan Ramer said it is an amazing feeling to come to the wilds, and see two healthy, happy babies.

“To have the rhino born last week and a giraffe baby born yesterday morning that we have been waiting for all this time, we are really pleased. Also, to have them both be healthy, up on their feet and nursing, it is just wonderful. It is what we are all about,” said Ramer.

The new Masai giraffe is a boy, and Ramer said that is no surprise with who his dad is.

“His mother is Savannah, this is her fifth baby. She has been a very good mother and so we are confident that she is going to take care of this little guy. His father is Raha who so far has had all boys, and this is I think Raha’s seventh boy,” said Ramer.

After a thorough exam, the new giraffe appears to be in great health and could one day grow to as tall as 18 feet. His 2-year-old brother also lives at The Wilds. Ramer said giraffes are in trouble, but programs like these certainly help.

“The little baby that was born yesterday is a Masai giraffe and they have recently been uplisted from vulnerable to endangered so we are really happy to be able to contribute to the conservation of this endangered species,” Ramer added.

Ramer said after both babies were born, there seems to be more people than normal at The Wilds.

“We think people are curious. We are really glad that people will come out and we will be able to show them these babies and tell those conservation stories and we are pretty busy today. We like to think that is probably because we have these babies to show off,” Ramer said.

Ramer said each trip to The Wilds is different, and now that there are two more babies, it is definitely worth coming out to see.
