Zane Gray Intermediate School helped their students start their summer off right by celebrating their community gardens with a Garden Social.

The students starting working on the gardens that are situated in planter’s boxes behind the school on June 7. Both flowers and produce were planted with the intention of some of it being used.

“We are celebrating all of the hard work that they’ve done this year in planting these gardens. We’re using mint from the garden for some of the drinks that we are having the kids serve to our guests. The kids have started from the very beginning weeding the gardens, and pulling all the weeds out, and planting starting from little seeds, and you can see all of the plants that are growing behind us,” Zane Grey Language Arts teacher Emily Brady said.

The idea for the initiative started with the decision on a theme for next year, which is “bloom into knowledge.” The idea for gardens the kids could work on to see the different stages of growth developed from there. The children have responded with a tremendous amount of excitement and interest to the new activity.

“So, they absolutely love it. The first thing we do every morning is come out here and water. Before we had a hose that reached out here, we were filling gallon jugs and walking out here every single day. But now we have a hose that reaches out here, and they fight over who gets to water. They also love to see the progress of the plants from the small tomatoes, now you can see there’s red tomatoes, and we have jalapenos growing, so they’re so excited about it,” Brady added.

The students currently have pumpkins growing in their garden that they are hoping will be ready to be used for their fall festival in October.
