South Zanesville Police Department Receives New Equipment

True Speed Lidar

Three local businesses have come together to donate the LTI 20/20 True Speed Lidar equipment to the South Zanesville Police Department.

Coconis, Lucky’s Bar and McClelland were the three businesses that were willing to help purchase the equipment.

According to Mark Ross, South Zanesville Police Chief, the True Speed Lidar will be used to help measure speeds, crime scenes and accidents that occur in the village.

“The issue is traffic safety. The village definitely wants our police department to conduct traffic, meaning to make traffic stops, stopping violators in the village and slowing down people,” Chief Ross stated. “We get a lot of complaints about speeders like on South Pembroke, North Pembroke, East Main Street and even people violating traffic laws here on Maysville Avenue on the four lanes. We do have assured clear distance accidents. Sometimes it happens around the traffic lights and we’ve had a lot of accidents in those intersections.”

Chief Ross explained how the equipment can be used in an accident by pointing it at an object and it will display the distance from point A and point B.

The South Zanesville Police Department also received an additional grant of over $900 from the Energy Corporation Round Up Program that will go towards the purchase of stop sticks.

“Stop sticks are a tool to use especially if there’s a pursuit going on,” Chief Ross said. “If I’m in front of that pursuit or my other officers are in front of that pursuit, we’re trained where we can throw out the stop sticks and hopefully slow down or even stop the pursuit so the perpetrator and any citizen can be saved from any accidents.”

Chief Ross expressed how their department is so grateful for all the donations. It’s really allowing the department to get up to date with new equipment and providing additional ways to protect the community .

Once all the equipment is purchased and in place, the officers will be able to utilize the tools during their rounds of patrol.
