Zanesville Fire Department Remind Residents to Change Clocks and Check Smoke Alarms

ZANESVILLE, Ohio- Daylight saving begins this weekend, but this is also a good time to check the smoke alarms.
The Zanesville Fire Department is reminding residents to run a full check on all the smoke alarms in the home and to replace them when they’ve expired.
“No matter what brand you have you should check your manufacturer’s warranty on them like how long they typically last. Most of them are like six or seven years so whatever brand you have, check the manufacturing date, make sure sensors have nothing bad on it depending on how long you’ve had it,” Bragg stated.
According to fire experts, the expiration date is labeled on the back of the alarm and should be replaced 10 years from the manufacturer date.
Bragg said residents should also routinely change the batteries to the smoke alarms and the best place is to set the alarm in the hallways close to the bedrooms.
“Knowing your house as far as safety when the alarm goes off with your family, set a plan for the quickest way to get out and a meeting spot outside for everyone to meet. Depending on how your house lays and where your bedrooms are and when the smoke alarm goes off, you just need to go over it with your family, and actually train with it. Do it a time or two throughout the year so they all know where to get out the quickest and where to meet so they can all be accounted for,” Bragg said.
If you are needing a new smoke detector, you can visit the fire department where they provide one free smoke detector per resident in connection with the ABC Wilson Fund.
