Masonic Time Capsule Opening Scheduled

A piece of Masonic Temple history will be unveiled to the public this summer.
On June 24, 1902 a time capsule was placed in a cornerstone laying ceremony at the site of the Masonic Temple in downtown Zanesville. 120 years and 1 day later the Masons will open the capsule that was located after the Masonic Temple fire earlier this year.
“We were extremely surprised that the capsule was recovered and extremely grateful. Surprised that we were able to get it and preserve some of our history that was lost,” said Lodge of Amity #5 Member Matt Baldwin.
The Masons will share the time capsules contents as they open it live during a black-tie optional even on Saturday, June 25 at the Zane State College Campus Center. They speculate the capsule could contain memorabilia, postage stamps and coins.
“We feel it’s very important to share those items with the community because it was important to brethren at that time to put it there to begin with, but to not share those items, whether it be the items unique to Masons, different organizations that are still in the community today that might pertain to them, but to not share it with the community would be a disservice,” said Lodge member Chad Bonifield.
The event will also include dinner, live entertainment, vendors and an auction. Proceeds raised from the event will go towards rebuilding a future Masonic Temple and helping other community projects.
