Croatia going deep again at World Cup after shootout win

AL WAKRAH, Qatar (AP) — Croatia is going deep at another World Cup and the team is taking the long route once again. Croatia goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic saved three penalty kicks in his team’s 3-1 win over Japan in a shootout. The result secured a return to the quarterfinals for the runners-up in the 2018 tournament. Mario Pasalic converted the clinching penalty for Croatia after the teams were tied at 1-1 after extra time. Livakovic saved penalties from Takumi Minamino, Kaoru Mitomo and Maya Yoshida. Japan had been looking to reach the quarterfinals for the first time but fell short again.

Bennett, Duggan, Stroud, Williams are Heisman finalists

Quarterbacks Stetson Bennett of Georgia, Max Duggan of TCU, C.J. Stroud of Ohio State and Caleb Williams of Southern California are the finalists for the Heisman Trophy. Sixers’ Harden to return Monday against Rockets after injury

HOUSTON (AP) — James Harden is returning for the Philadelphia 76ers against the Houston Rockets after missing 14 games with a foot injury. Harden spent just more than eight seasons with the Rockets before being traded to Brooklyn in January 2021. Before Monday, he last played Nov. 2. He had a tendon strain in his right foot. Harden won the MVP award with the Rockets in 2018 and was a three-time scoring champion in his time in Houston.

Jackson’s injury a concern, but Ravens’ defense playing well

BALTIMORE (AP) — The Baltimore Ravens suddenly have their work cut out for them if they want to win the AFC North. Lamar Jackson’s injury is an obvious concern. So is a surging Cincinnati team. Still, Baltimore took another step forward last weekend. The Ravens rallied late to edge the Denver Broncos 10-9. Baltimore’s remaining schedule includes a few other teams that might also struggle to score. So the Ravens might be able to win with defense until Jackson comes back from the knee injury that knocked him out of the game after one quarter.

Panthers waive struggling QB Mayfield, a former No. 1 pick

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Carolina Panthers have waived struggling quarterback Baker Mayfield after the 2018 No. 1 draft pick asked for his release. Mayfield would be subject to waivers and become a free agent if he goes unclaimed. The move does not come as a surprise, because Sam Darnold replaced Mayfield after his failed second stint as starting quarterback, and the Panthers like what they have in P.J. Walker. The move gives Mayfield a chance to potentially land with a team that needs quarterback help. San Francisco’s Jimmy Garoppolo, Jacksonville’s Trevor Lawrence and Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson all suffered injuries over the weekend.
