Michael J. Salahub, Sr

Michael J. Salahub, Sr., 101, passed away 1:47 PM, Sunday, February 19, 2023, at Genesis Morrison House Hospice following injuries sustained from a fall. He was born, September 22, 1921, in Zanesville, the son of John and Pauline (Tymetick) Salahub. Michael is reunited in passing with his wife, Theresa Durant Salahub, who died in 1996. Michael was a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church and retired from Dura Corporation.
Michael was an avid reader of anything in print. He never advanced past the ninth grade but had a great desire to learn as much as he could, and was very knowledgeable in current events and loved to have a friendly discussion on solving the world’s problems.
Michael was the oldest World War II Veteran in Muskingum County, having proudly served his country in the United States Marines. He was a machine gun crewman, having fought in the battle of the Ryukyu Islands in Okinawa.
Michael and his wife were avid gardeners, well known for their produce. They operated a small produce business in their garage during the summer months. People from all over Zanesville would patronize their business for the freshest and most reasonable vegetables around.
Michael is survived by his daughter, Judy Pletcher, grandchildren, Jennifer (Rob) McGraner of Pataskala, Allison (Fred) Buck, Adam (Jenni) Pletcher of Hilliard, Becky Salahub, Susan (Matt) Derwacter, and daughter-in-law, Donna Salahub.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Theresa Salahub; his son, Michael Salahub, Jr.; son-in-law, John Pletcher, brothers, Andrew Salahub who was killed in WW II and John Salahub; sisters, Connie Penos and Katherine Kaminski.
