Genesis Now Offering Dissolving Heart Stent

ZANESVILLE, Ohio– Last week, Genesis HealthCare System implemented a new technology that replaces the current metallic stents for coronary artery disease.
A new dissolvable stent, called Absorb, works just like the metallic stents in which it opens clogged arteries to restore blood flow, but then gradually dissolves after six months and will be completely dissolved after 3 years.
Dr. Albdulhay Albirini, M.D., FACC, interventional cardiologist with Genesis Heart, Lung & Vascular Group, said that Absorb is a game changer in coronary artery disease.
“Last week, we implanted the first absorb stent for one of our patients. The FDA recently approved this stent about two weeks ago. “
He said that stent is comprised of Lactic Acid, which metabolizes in the arteries and then later dissolves. “In the treatment of coronary artery disease, I think that tens and thousands of patients will be candidates for this treatment.â€
Dr. Albirini said that he thinks young people will benefit the most from this new technology. “We feel that the benefits of this new stent will be in the long term, ten, fifteen, twenty years from the time of implantation.â€
Dr. Albirini also said that he believes this will help reduce patient’s risk of reoccurring heart-related events in the future.
