Margaret Quinn

Margaret Ann (Weber) Quinn got her wings on November 5, 2023. Quinn, 91, was at home, surrounded by her loving family when she departed for her eternal home with the Lord.

Margaret was named Barbara when she was born in Zanesville, OH, on August 26, 1932, the middle child of William L. and Barbara (Sutton) Weber. She later took the name Margaret shortly after birth as a tribute to her mother’s sister.

Margaret is a 1950 graduate of St. Nicholas High School. She attended Miami University in Oxford, OH, before marrying Thomas G. Quinn in 1953. Over the course of a 63-year marriage, Tom and Margaret had seven children and many loving grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Margaret always wanted a big family. And she expected her children to be their best and to make a difference. She and Tom set shining examples. They were longtime members and volunteers at St. Thomas Aquinas Church and School.

For many years, Margaret delivered Meals-On-Wheels to homebound seniors. She and Tom were longtime volunteers for Good Samaritan Hospice. Also, Margaret and Tom were leaders in establishing a local affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), and were recognized as the area’s spokespersons for the mentally ill.

Margaret received many recognitions for her efforts, including the Steel Magnolia Award from AK Steel Corporation; induction in the NAMI Ohio Hall of Fame; the Bob and Delores Hope Good Samaritan Award; the Rose and Sam Stein Award from the Ohio Hospice Organization; Vocational Recognition Award from The Rotary Club of Zanesville Daybreak; Friend of Recovery Award from the Mental Health and Recovery Services Board; Muskingum Community Foundation Award; Sertoma Service to Mankind Award; and Recognition of Outstanding Attainment from the Ohio Senate. The entire Quinn family received a Stigma Buster Award from NAMI Ohio in recognition for the Quinn Family band that has performed for more than 20 years in the name of recovery from mental illness and addiction.

Over the years, Margaret learned to appreciate sports and became an avid football fan. She often cheered louder from her living room seat than anyone else in the house. She followed Ohio State, Notre Dame, the Cleveland Browns and the Cincinnati Bengals.

Margaret loved nature and particularly enjoyed getting away to the Weber family cottage at Rokeby Lock on the Muskingum River, which she described as “heaven.”

She always insisted she still felt 25 years old, and she often acted the part, turning up for live music at The Barn and wherever any of her children would be performing.

Margaret will be remembered as a mother figure or best friend to most people who knew her. She always had time to listen to your troubles and never failed to offer an encouraging word.

Margaret is survived by her children: Gretchen (Jeff, deceased) Booth of Nashport, Thomas (Susan) Quinn, Jr. of Athens, Carolyn Quinn of Zanesville, Paul Quinn of Zanesville, Charles (Ann) Quinn of Detroit, Frances (Ken) Pendley of Galena, and Patrick Quinn of Zanesville. She is preceded in death by her husband, Tom; daughter, Barbara; grandson, Andrew (Paul); and her siblings, Ursula Antonetz and William L Weber, Jr.

Visitation will be held 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 pm on Monday, November 13, 2023, at the Hillis, Combs & Nestor Funeral Home, 935 Forest Avenue, Zanesville, where a Christian Vigil will be held at 7:45 pm, in conjunction with a celebration of Margaret’s life.
