Maysville looking to build off historic season

ZANESVILLE, OH- The Maysville Panthers boys basketball team had a historic season in 2022. The Panthers started the year on a 16 game winning streak. Maysville won three playoff games and was eventually eliminated against Bishop Ready at Ohio University.
“It was unbelievable. It’s something you dream of having a team that gets a long so well and plays for each other. They made our job easy as coaches. ” Said head coach Dave Brown.
One factor to last season was senior guard Hayden Jarrett. He became the program’s all-time leading scorer and eclipsed 1,000 points last year. Jarrett was a star in many ways and his production is hard to replace.
“We’re trying to do it by committee. We’re not saying hey Jordan you need to replace Hayden, it’s each guy doing their best getting better every day. We are still working together as a team on our book studies and skull sessions on how to create that team bond we had last year where guys play for each other.” Brown said.
Senior forward Alex Bobb was also a big piece to the team’s success in 2022. After deciding to not play football in the fall, he dedicated all of his energy and time to being ready for the long basketball season. He has a different leadership approach on the floor.
“I’ve always led by example because I’ve had Hayden beside me. He is the vocal guy, he would say something we need to do and I would show it. Now I kind of have to be both. I have to be that vocal guy.” Said Bobb.
Expectations from the outside tend to be higher coming off a year with so much success. Coach Brown believes it can continue over to 2023.
“Hopefully we’re peaking at February turns to March. Obviously we lost a lot from last season but I like where this team is early on in the season. They are working hard. We’re just going to be our best that we can be every single day and we’ll see where that falls at the end of the year.”
The Panthers open the season on Friday December 2nd against Bishop Rosecrans.
