ZANESVILLE, Ohio – In pursuit of teaching children the importance of exercise and eating right, one man is riding cross-county on a bicycle and giving demonstrations on fitness.

Tommy Schneider is biking from coast-to-coast and making stops along the way to teach children the importance of exercise. His stop in Zanesville at the Muskingum Family YMCA on Monday was his ninth stop.

Schneider spent the morning giving demonstrations to children at the ‘Y’ about what foods to avoid and how to stay active.

“When we cut physical education in the school system, when we just overlook the importance of physical education and throw a kid on an iPad, or iPod, or iPhone, just to let busy time go by, it’s an opportunity lost when it comes to being healthier and living a healthier lifestyle,” said Schneider.

Schneider left Los Angeles on July 7. His last stop is in Washington DC and he hopes to make it there by Thursday. His reason for making Zanesville a stop came on a recommendation.

“I have a friend in Chicago, Katie Lynn, who is from here,” said Schneider. “Her mother, Cindy, had thought this would be a great stop. She told me how great the YMCA here was. Everything lived up to those expectations.”
