ZANESVILLE, OH – A new program introduced by the State Treasurer’s Office could help people out with home buying.

The new Ohio Homebuyer Plus Program is for those 18 and older who want to put roots down here in Ohio.

This program will act like a savings account and it will help pay for things like the down payment or closing costs.

Ohio Treasurer, Robert Sprague, hosted a roundtable discussion with City leaders about this new program.

“You just have to be a resident of Ohio as well. You can put as little as $100 into the account or as much as $100,000 to save for a home.” Sprague said. “We’ll grow your savings faster at an enhanced savings rate. So, not only do you get an interest rate from the financial institution locally, but in the Treasurer’s Office we add additional money to that to help your savings grow faster.”

Sprague also said his office collected some statistics into home buying and the outcome wasn’t good for many reasons.

“A lot of people are having trouble buying a house right now in the state of Ohio and there’s multiple reasons.” Sprague said. “The interest rates are higher, there’s not as much inventory, but one of the primary reasons is that people don’t have the down payment, a 20% down payment, it’s a big nest egg to try to save up.”

Sprague said he hopes this program helps to change some of these negative statistics.
