Verna Smith

Verna L. Smith, 86, of Newark, Ohio died Friday night, March 15, 2024, at Genesis Morrison House in Zanesville.
Born November 1, 1937, in Toboso, Ohio, she was a daughter of the late David Vernon and Velva Viola (Victor) Sidle and a 1955 graduate of Hanover Toboso High School. Verna attended the Toboso United Methodist Church, where she loved to lead the praise singing or sing along. She enjoyed yodeling, cooking, and sending cards of encouragement. Verna’s greatest joy was caring for and spending time with her family.
Surviving is her husband, Carl Dean Smith whom she married June 7, 1957; daughter, Cheryl (Albert) May of Newark; four grandchildren, Jimmy (Kehley) Smith, Joe May, Emily (Aaron) Boyd, and Kevin Carver, Jr.; six great grandchildren, Cole, Maddy, Nova, James, Maliyah, and Jensen; brother, Floyd Wayne (Myrna) Sidle of Newark and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, James “Jim” Dean Smith and seven siblings, Roy, Kenny, Dale, Chester, Millie, Marge, and Eleanor.
Friends and family may call 5:00 to 7:00 PM Tuesday, March 19, 2024, at the Frazeysburg Chapel of Vensil & Chute Funeral Home, 110 West Third Street.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, March 20, 2024, at the funeral home with Pastors Thomas S. Tipton and Theresa Wallington-Tipton officiating. A burial will follow in Hanover Cemetery.
