Bomb Squad Called to Apartments

NEW STRAITSVILLE, Ohio – Local first responders cleared a building Sunday morning after receiving a call about a suspicious device inside.
At approximately 1:13 a.m, the Perry County Sheriff’s Office received a call reporting a possible explosive device that was found in a residence at 203 West Main Street in the Village of New Straitsville. According to Sheriff William R. Barker, Deputy’s from the Perry County Sheriff’s Office and Shawnee Police Department were dispatched to the scene and on arrival confirmed a possible explosive device.
Sheriff Barker said the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office was contacted for assistance from their Bomb Squad and the New Straitsville and Shawnee Fire Departments along with Perry County Emergency Management were dispatched to assist with evacuating the nearby residences.
ODOT was also dispatched to the scene to route traffic around the area of State Route 93 in New Straitsville. Sheriff Barker said on arrival of the Bomb Squad it was confirmed that there were 2 IED’s (Improvised Explosive Devices). The devices were transported from the residence to a pre-determined location and the devices were detonated under controlled conditions.
