Tips for Managing Holiday Stress and Staying Sober

ZANESVILLE, OH – The holiday season is full of joy, but it can also bring stress, especially for those in recovery from alcohol addiction.

Common holiday stressors include packed to-do lists and feeling overwhelmed. Muskingum Behavioral Health recommends planning ahead, pacing yourself, and making time for self-care to ease the pressure.

“You don’t have to do it all. Know that it’s okay to say ‘no’. Set boundaries. If you have too many parties to go to, it’s okay to not attend them all or to go to all the plays and all that stuff. You have the ability to say ‘no’ and it’s okay to say ‘no’. Don’t forget about self-care. Take care of yourself. If you need a minute, sit down, have a cup of tea, drink a cup of hot chocolate, and maybe do some deep breathing. Sit down and relax for a minute and take some time for yourself,” Muskingum Behavioral Health CEO Yolanda Taylor said.

For those in recovery, the holidays can present additional challenges. It’s important to set boundaries, avoid triggering situations, and surround yourself with supportive people. Don’t hesitate to reach out to friends, family, or support groups for help.

“If you need help, do not be afraid to reach out to anyone. To your friends, to your family, and know that there is always a 12 Step meeting just around the corner and that they never close during the holidays. There’s always a place for you to receive help should you need it,” Taylor said.

If you need help or support over the holidays, feel free to reach out the Muskingum Behavioral Health. You can find more information about their services on their website.
