Fallen Tree Forces Family To Leave Home

A tree that fell onto a house has left at least 4 people displaced Wednesday evening.

The incident happenend around 3:00PM at 149 Galliger Street. We spoke to Rex McManes who has been living at the home for a little over a year now. He was inside when the tree fell, and described to us what it was like.

“I was in and out of a movie I was watching, I turned around and the whole house shook….my sister–our rooms are on the backside and it fell right down the middle. Alright? So yeah it jolted the house.”

No injuries were reported. Winds have been gusting to 30 miles an hour Wednesday. City of Zanesville Building Official Tim Smith but that was only part of the reason why the 100 year old tree fell.

“They removed a large branch that kind of unbalanced the tree. That’s basically what aided in it….there’s quite a bit of weight in there on just the vines that’s grown up on it.”

Smith says there is no structural damage to the house, but it does pose a threat so the family has been displaced until it can be cut down. Smith says they did have insurance on the home. AEP has shut off power to the structure, and the alley way along side the home has been closed. The Zanesville Fire Department also responded to the scene, and the Muskingum Valley Red Cross has been contacted to assist the family.
