Muskingum County Commissioners Vacate Treasurers Position

The Muskingum County Commissioners vacated the County Treasurers position Monday afternoon.

The position was formerly held by Carol Friel. A new legislative action was passed in March that states a treasurer can not be absent from office for more than 30 days or actions to vacate the position can take place. We spoke to commissioner, Jim Porter who told us more about the meeting.

“The purpose for today’s hearing was to discuss the County Treasurer. We invited her Thursday to a hearing with a chance to explain why we were doing what we were going to do and she could respond to that. She chose not to show up today, so as a result of that, Commissioners passed a resolution deeming the treasurers office vacant.”

Friel would have been running for office again next year but the term wouldn’t start until the following September. Diane Beisser is the interim Treasurer for now. Porter explained what would happen going forward.

“It will be up to the central committeeman to pass or decide who the next treasurer will be. According to code they have not less than 5 days and no more than 45 days to act on that.”

We reached out to Friel this afternoon who stated she was unable to make the meeting and resigned from her position as treasurer for personal reasons.
