Walking for the Fight Against Cancer

At 11:00 a.m. Saturday, Muskingum County cancer survivors, their friends, family and many more people will circle Riverside Park.

They’ll be doing so for 12 hours. It’s all part of the annual Relay for Life of Muskingum County. Community Manager Jonathan Schuler said it doesn’t matter if you come for ten minutes or ten hours, as long as you’re there.

Even if you can’t make it tomorrow, Schuler said Relay for Life works year round to benefit those who have fought cancer.

“If you want to make a difference we are out there year round and anytime you want to jump in and help us out, we are more than willing to accept you as an event leadership team member, as a team captain, as a team member,” he said. “Any help we can get, we’ll take it anytime of year.”

Schuler said there are 22 teams registered for the walk, but that doesn’t mean more people can’t show up at the park Saturday.

“There is no deadline,” Schuler said. “If you haven’t heard of relay, this is the first time, you’re welcome to come out tomorrow. You can register there. If you’re interested in having a team we can get you set up, get your information, get you ready to go for next year.”

Last year, the Muskingum County Relay for Life event raised $58,000 for the American Cancer Society. Schuler wants to match that this year. As of now, they are standing around $30,000.
