People Gather to Relay for Life at Riverside Park

Over 200 people gathered to Relay for Life June 13.

The annual event began at 11:00 a.m. with opening ceremonies and a survivor’s lap to kick off a day of walking to honor those fighting, surviving, and those who weren’t as lucky. Community Manager of Relay for Life Jonathan Schuler said the day can heal.

“A lot of people who are currently fighting or have lost a loved one come to relay and they really join with hundreds of people who feel and have been through things they have and so it’s really a sense of community and that sense of community can be really really helpful for a lot of people,” said Schuler.

There was also music, food, and silent auctions and all proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society. Those involved with the Cancer Society work all year round and Schuler is happy to see them celebrate their efforts.

“More so than working and fundraising, it’s really an opportunity for them to enjoy all of their hard work,” said Schuler.

The event lasted all day to represent the ebb and flow of a patients life as they undergo cancer treatment. The night came to a close around 10:30 p.m.
