Golfing for Women’s Education

Female golfers from around the area came out to the Zanesville Country Club Monday to celebrate women’s education.

The Zane State College Foundation held its 7th annual Afternoon Tee: Drive for Women to raise money for women’s scholarships. President of Zane State College, Doctor Paul Brown, talked to us about the success of Monday’s event.

“It’s great, we’ve raised about $40,000 for women’s scholarships, and that’s what today is all about to raise money for women,” Brown said. “We’ve had about 17 teams this year, which is the most we’ve ever had, so it’s growing every year in popularity, and again the bottom line is to really fund some women to go to college that wouldn’t be able to that if not for this tournament.”

Zanesville native, and current women’s golf coach at the University of Minnesota, Michele Redman, also hosts the fundraiser. She gave us some insight into her passion to give back, and her inspiration for this event.

“The first year that we started the event, my mom was instrumental,” Redmand said. “At that point I was still traveling quite a bit on the tour, so you’re kinda caught up in your own thing and I think once my mom passed a couple years ago it really made me realize what she was trying to get me to do, which is kinda how I grew up, she led me along the path the way that I was supposed to be going. I was fortunate enough to get a scholarship for school myself and graduate, so I feel like she is very responsible for me being here today and really helping me grow this event.”

Redman said it’s great to see the event growing every year and continuing to help women get educated.
