New Camp Opens at Nashport Elementary

Students at Nashport elementary immerse themselves in a new kind of summer camp.

Teachers at the school brought Camp Invention to Nashport for the first time this year. The camp lasts all week this week. Camp director and first grade teacher, Sarah Burdine, said it’s a curriculum provided by a national company called Invent Now. She said when she heard about the program, she had to bring it to Nashport.

“It just looked like a lot of fun,” Burdine said. “It was something I would like to do as a kid, even as an adult and it’s something that I know kids at our school would be interested in. My own son is here. He’s really into this stuff. He was excited to come this week.”

The 79 campers arrive at the school each day at 9:00 a.m. and leave around 3:30. Burdine said they will be busy going through the four different modules. But she is confident they will enjoy the time as they complete many hands on activities.

One group even worked Monday to make shields and tested them out by tossing water balloons at each other.

“They seem to be having a great time,” Burdine said. “The older kids are worried that they’re going to learn something this week. But they’re having a lot of fun. They’re doing a lot of problem solving and creating things that they might not have thought they could do.”

The camp concludes Friday, but Burdine said she is ready to sign up for next year and hopefully keep the camp coming back to Nashport Elementary each year.
