Sheriff’s Office says ‘Be Safe’ with at Home Firework Displays

The Muskingum County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind the community that setting off fireworks without the proper permit and training is illegal.

Sheriff Matt Lutz said that although they can’t monitor the entire 680 square miles, law enforcement will react to complaints.

Using fireworks illegally is considered a misdemeanor crime and can result in a $1,000 fine and up to six months in jail. Lutz said it all comes down to staying safe this holiday.

“We’ve had incidents in Muskingum County where people have hurt themselves very badly by having these fireworks explode prematurely and that kind of thing so obviously the first thing is safety and I think that’s why under state law you have to have permit to do these things,” said Lutz.

Those with a permit should use caution during their shows. Lutz said being mindful of your surroundings and courteous of neighbors goes a long way during the holiday.

“We want you to just be safe, know your surroundings, have good crowd control and what I mean by that is where you audience is going to be,” said Lutz. “Make sure of your high tension wires above you. Not only where you’re setting the fireworks off but where they’re going to land. ”

Local law enforcement will be using their traffic safety grant to place extra patrols during the holiday weekend, they will be keeping a close eye on speeding and seat belt usage.
