Occupational Therapy Program to Host 2nd Annual Health and Wellness Fair

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – Muskingum University will be hosting an event that invites the elderly to their campus to interact with the students and discuss how everyday can be done more safely and efficiently.

Master of Occupational Therapy Program Director Kim Lawler announced how the public and the students can both benefit from the second annual Older Adult Health and Wellness Fair that will take place early next month.

“So the program is the Health and Wellness Fair and it’s targeted for individuals in the community, 65 years and older,” Lawler said. “So the older adult population, helping to learn how to engage in activities by learning strategies and ideas for ways to do things that might be a little easier and to help them do things that they want to do and need to do.”

The Occupational Therapy Program teaches caregiving to students who will be working with adults across the age spectrum and the upcoming Health and Wellness Fair is an opportunity for students to work with the elderly as well as for the elderly to help the students gain experience working with patients who are among that age segment of the population.

“They’ll be engaged. They’ll be doing things with the students. They won’t just be picking up hand-outs and walking away. They’ll learn about things like driving and how to stay safe behind the wheel, how to keep their home safe and maybe make some simple modifications that will make their life easier or those that visit them. Also looking at things just like day-to-day, how can they make it easier by doing energy conservation. Work smarter not harder,” Lawler said.

The Health and Wellness Fair will take place from 10:30 to Noon, Saturday March 8th, at Caldwell Hall on the Muskingum University Campus in New Concord. For more information, you can call (740) 826-8466 or (740) 826-8477.
