Shrove Tuesday Feast

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – Shrove Tuesday is a traditional day recognized in Christianity to empty the pantry in preparation for the Lenten season.

St. James Episcopal Church’s Shrove Tuesday Dinner Co-Chair Sherry Gillespie shares the importance of carrying on the time honored tradition.

“We’ve been doing this since before the Civil War,” Gillespie said. “It has become a tradition, it’s a fundraiser. We have a special pancake recipe that we use for our desert. You get a nice ham dinner/meal but the pancakes are our specialty. Our pancakes are the desert.”

Visitors will enter the side door and will be directed to the chapel to wait if the dining room seating is full. The meal includes ham, cheesy potatoes and green beans, applesauce, dinner rolls and more.

“For a Tuesday you’re going to enjoy a really nice meal, in a nice atmosphere,” Gillespie said. “I always felt like you’re inviting your outside family in for a nice meal. And it is. It’s a really good meal. We offer carryout, we’re handicap accessible.”

St. James’ Shrove Tuesday Dinner will take place from 4:30 to 6:30, Tuesday, March 4th, at 155 North Sixth Street in Zanesville. The meal will cost $15 dollars and children under 12, who only want pancakes, will get to eat for free.
