Plate-breaking Celebration

The Crooksville-Roseville Pottery Festival kicked off with its annual plate-breaking ceremony.

The ceremony was held Thursday, at the Ohio Ceramic Center. Resident potter, Dale Hague, said even though the number of potteries is declining, this event is a great way for the community to still celebrate the area’s rich heritage.

“I think it’s important to recognize how much of a contribution it made to the region as a whole, historically,” Hague said. “We’re looking to train and also invite potters to move here and make pottery here, we already have a tradition of pottery making, why not work to continue that.”

It’s not your average opening ceremony, Hague said, but the event is one of the museum’s largest fundraisers. Following the ceremony, people were able to bid on 10 one-of-a-kind ceramic plates.

“A lot of places do a ribbon-cutting or something similar to that, and this is the pottery festival, so it just seemed right to do something with something made from clay, so we break a plate,” he said.

The event brought out both locals and tourists a like, to share in the unique festivities.
