Farmer’s Market Featuring Fresh Tomatoes this Week

Tomatoes were all the rage at the downtown Zanesville Farmer’s Market Wednesday.

The newly ripened fruit was this week’s best seller. Market president, Mark Barnhart, said the constant rain caused a significant delay in their growth, so consumers were eager to get their hands on them.

"It’s been a bad year for stuff, people don’t have tomatoes, they’re not ripening, we haven’t had enough sunshine, their blighting early, the moisture leads to disease, the wet weather has decreased yields," Barnhart said.

Sweet corn and cucumbers were other popular items. Barnhart said he hopes to have winter squash and fresh peppers in the coming weeks.

"If I have peppers, they’ll go fast, tomatoes will still be big, people are starting to get a few cucumbers and squashes in their own garden, but they’re still selling fairly well, I would hope the corn would be good," he said.

Barnhart said the Downtown Farmer’s Market provides an assortment of home-grown produce, bringing customers back week, after week.
