Local Woman Honored for Community Service
A local woman was recognized for her continued efforts to give back to the community.
Sertoma awarded Tami Swope the Service to Mankind Award at Eaglesticks Golf Club Tuesday. Chairman, Mike Maniaci, said its the most prestigious award the club hands out.
“It is for a non-Sertoman, that does work in our community, and Tami Swope is our winner this year, and she has done wonders, done wonderful work for cancer, and in the fight against cancer, and we believe that she is a very, very well-deserving candidate for this award,” Maniaci said.
Sertoma is an organization that works hard to meet the needs of the community through volunteer service. Swope’s been a volunteer for the American Cancer Society for almost 40 years, and she said this award was completely unexpected.
“The most important thing to me is all of the volunteers, hundreds of volunteers who have helped me all these years with all of their time, talent and energy, I mean if it weren’t for them I wouldn’t be receiving this award,” Swope said.
Swope is also volunteering for the Y-bridge Art Festival, coming up in August.
