Dresden Melon Festival Wraps Up

The Dresden Melon Festival wrapped Aug 8.

Just one shuttle from the Tri-Valley parking lot, the festival featured food, entertainment, and of course melons. Mayor of Dresden and Melon Festival Chairman David Mathew said the festival reminds him of the community he lives in and serves.

“Dresden was always a great place to come home to and I’ve lived here all my life,” said Mathew. “It’s just a nice community and if you look around and see the comraderry and people are. There’s a closeness that you don’t get in the big city. ”

The morning kicked off with a 5-K and the naming of the Melon Festival Prince and Princess. After questions like ‘what’s your favorite part about living in this community?’ and ‘what do you want to be when you grow up?’ Gwendolyn Lacy and Garrett Church took the crowns. Garrett wants to be an ‘Army man’ while Gwendolyn plans to teach math. Mathew said the festival has only gotten better over the years.

“Bob Lane had asked me if we would get involved and rekindle the Melon Festival that had quit in the mid-seventies and then it was horse pulls and they had a square dance and stuff and this has just evolved in eight years,” said Mathew. “As you can see there’s a lot of stuff going on. We have vendors all through the park . There’s all kinds of things to do. The melon was just as excuse to get together and build on.”

Musical acts took the stage all day and Double Cut stopped by to top of the night.
