Rosecrans Back In School

The school year is underway at Bishop Rosecrans High School.

As it’s done for the past five years, incoming freshman immediately got divided into one of the four houses, Matthew, Mark, Luke or John. The system mixes all 120 students into the separate houses.

Principal Jennifer Mallett, said it helps to grow a family bond between the students. One of the house directors, senior, Sydney Nicholson, agreed with that. She said small mentor groups within the houses expand on the relationship even more.

“Once we break into mentor groups, it becomes a lot more like a face-to-face, like a closer relationship,” Nicholson said. “We really get to know each other, that’s why we love our school because it’s so small and you get to know everyone.”

Not only does the house system get all grade levels interacting with one another, but Mallett said it grows key life skills. It only took her one word to describe the most beneficial trait students learn.

“Leadership,” she said. “The house system gives them so many leadership opportunities. And when they’re filling out college applications, what a great — one of the questions they ask is how were you a leader in your school? They can go into detail then on what the house system is and how they led in the house system and what their role was.”

On day one of the school year, the general atmosphere is that of excitement as the house gear up to complete service projects and begin the competition for the end of the year house cup.
