ZANESVILLE, Ohio – Members of the Zanesville Police Department reflected today on the loss of one of their former members.

Former Police Sergeant Walter ‘Deke’ Miedel Jr. passed away this past Friday at the age of 71. He served the City of Zanesville for almost 30 years. ZPD Capt. Doug Merry worked with Miedel in the 1980s and 90s in the drug investigation unit and said he was role model officer.

“He was a great leader,” said Capt. Merry. “He taught us loads about drug investigation. He had done it long before I was ever involved with it. He stayed super knowledgeable on the laws. Something new came out and he was right on top of it.”

Miedel retired from the force in 1992. Capt. Merry said he was very dedicated to his work, but outside of work he had many hobbies.

“He was into model cars big time. We were talking about it this morning. There were some cars that you could touch and there were others that he would kind of give you a look and you didn’t touch that one for any reason,” said Capt. Merry while laughing.

Today Miedel  was laid to rest at Zanesville Memorial Park.
