Local Apple Crops Flourish This Fall
Despite the lack of rain as of late… Ohio’s apple producers say this year’s apple crop is a good one.
Today we went to a local orchard owned by Terry Paul to get his take on the matter. Unlike last year his crop took a serious beating from some hail during the month of May but this year his apples are back and better than ever.
“Our crop this year, it’s a good crop, I mean quality wise we really have a good year. We could have had a little more size because of lack of rain but at the same time the lack of rain helped us flavor. Because whenever it’s dry it seems like the roots of the trees and stuff go down and their flavor is better and I think the fruit is a really good flavor this year.”
The orchard has been in his family since he was 7 years old and terry says they have about a 75% full crop with yellow delicious as their largest crop. The trees that bared heavy last year are a little bit lighter this year and that’s just a natural progression of the trees he explains.
“I guess I like to watch it grow. Sometimes the spraying is a part that i’m not really…I wish I could raise without spraying fruit but for me to get the quality apple it’s necessary. Favorite part, I guess picking them” he joked.
All of the apple varieties are available at Paul’s Farm Market and Greenhouse located at 2355 South River Road in Zanesville.
