Pumpkin Crops Survive in Zanesville Area

The early summer season brought rain and Ohio farmers know best what rain can do to a crop.

While some parts of the buckeye state are seeing the consequences of the wet season in their pumpkin crops, Store Operator at Riesbecks Pick n Save Rich Daugherty said that south eastern Ohio hasn’t seen a shortage.

“The pumpkins this year initially were off to a slow start because of the weather but the weather around here as it got warmer, the pumpkins have actually developed quite well,” said Daugherty. “We get ours locally on a farm. We have them pre-booked in and as you can see they have grown quite large so we weren’t really as affected as some areas of Ohio. ”

He said that pumpkin sales are average for the year and they aren’t scared that they’ll run short for the season but the warm weather may have people thinking more summer than fall.

“With days like this, you know, people aren’t really thinking fall yet but you know as the nights get cooler and the days get cooler, that’s when it kind of settles into peoples minds that falls here and we better start decorating,” said Daugherty.

There are several locations in the Y-City to pick up your pumpkins. Including local farmer’s markets, and McDonald’s Farm just east of Zanesville.
