211 Calls from September Show Hunger Problem

211 calls from the month of September suggest hunger remains a problem in Muskingum County.

The United Way provides the 211 call service to Muskingum, Morgan, and Perry County, in order to help families find assistance with food, utilities, crisis situations and much more. Community Impact Director Becky Clawson says that in the month of September, of the 806 calls made in Muskingum County, 402 were food related.

“It’s not a new problem,” said Clawson. “We’ve been seeing this trend so I think that in the coming months you’ll see many more conversations about revolving around this. ”

Utilities assistance also brought in many calls last month. Clawson said that they do expect an increase in those types of emergencies in the winter months with the rising electric and gas bills.

She said that calling in a time of need isn’t something you should ever feel afraid to do, as the program exists to help all residents of the three counties and if you’re scared you don’t qualify for continued assistance, there is one time emergency help that can be provided.

“We really want people to call and ask for help because there are services available and there are resources for them,” said Clawson. “So please I encourage them to call and we will try to find some help for you.”

You can also visit the website if you don’t want to speak to a live person but Clawson said that the more information you can give someone, the better fitted assistance you can receive. If dialing 211 doesn’t work you can dial the alternative number at 1-800-544-1601. The service is available 24 /7.
