Community ‘Makes Strides’ in 5-K
More than 700 people came out to ‘make strides’ against breast cancer Saturday.
The 5-K began at 10 a.m. and in true breast cancer awareness fashion, pink flooded the trail at Ohio University. From T-shirts to tu-tus. runners and walkers alike sported the now famous color for support. Community Manager for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Terri Kangas said that just seeing it gets her excited about events.
“I get that energy going when I see all that pink and honestly, it has become my favorite color,” said Kangas. “While I see it year ’round I just never get tired of seeing it because I know that it promotes awareness to people to remind them even if it’s just to go get your mammogram. ”
The 5-K raised $55,000 and Kangas said that it means more hope lodge stays for those receiving treatment, and it means research that can and has led to the discovery of new drugs to fight the second leading cause in cancer related deaths in women.
“We have to support this research so we can help the most people with our dollars raised and make sure that we’re finding cures and finding ways prevent as well,” said Kangas.
Kangus wants to remind women to self-check regularly, and said that you should get a base-line exam at 35 years old.
