Men Honored for Saving Youth

Two men are being honored by Muskingum County for their part in saving the life of a young man attempting to commit suicide.

It was almost a month ago. Muskingum County Juvenile Detention Intake Officer Jonah Carson was simply checking on the youth on a routine round. Every 15 minutes they check to ensure all is well but this time, it wasn’t. A young man was unconscious and it was apparent that he had attempted to commit suicide. Carson explained how he reacted to a sight he never wanted to see.

“When I found him I immediately called for the door to be opened,” said Carson. “I went in and I was able to cut everything off of him and was able to revive him with a sternum rub. You rub your knuckles on your sternum. He was conscious at that time. We had EMTs arrive .”

Carson made an ‘All Call’ to staff in the building and shift leader Jeff Fraunfelter stepped in to take control of the situation and make sure everyone knew what to do to help. He said when it comes to emergencies, it’s all about trusting the training.

“The first thing that goes through your head is adrenaline and panic but then the training kicks in and as soon as the training kicks in, everything just becomes automatic,” said Fraunfelter. “This is what we’ve been trained to do. This is what we do.”

Fraunfelter said he and Carson came to the Commissioners to accept the Certificates of Appreciation on behalf of the entire facility because each person worked that night to ensure the young man was saved.
