Handmade Ornaments Created to Honor Loved Ones this Holiday Season
Genesis Healthcare and Lifeline of Ohio are teaming up to give those who’ve lost loved ones some hope this holiday season.
Lifeline of Ohio invited the families of organ donors who’ve passed away to the Genesis Healthplex to make a Christmas ornament to honor their loved one.
Jennifer McNichols lost her sister just a few years ago in a car accident and she said it’s events like these ones where she can connect with others who know what it’s like to mourn the loss but appreciate the gift to others that organ donation creates.
"Just to be there with other people and to hear their stories," said McNichols. "That’s the biggest thing and it’s just so inspiring to hear the impact their loved ones made or even to talk to recipients."
Making a wreath with blue and green glass in honor of her sister, McNichols said it’s the first Christmas the family will stay home for the holidays.
"The first Christmas we went on a cruise," said McNichols. "The second Christmas we went to Florida, and this year we’re staying home and you know the reality, she’s not with us. It’s easier when you’re away and you’re not thinking of missing your loved one."
Although it’s difficult to be without her sister, McNichols said that knowing a life was saved is a good feeling.
"We got the letter just a few months ago from one of the kidney recipients and to hear how it changed their life, it’s just fantastic," said McNichols. "They described how it was before they had the kidney and then how life has changed for the better "
Each person made two ornaments; one to be displayed at genesis and the other to take home.
