Veteran found dead with a Mortar in trailer

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – South Zanesville officials found a man dead but that’s not all.
South Zanesville Police were called to Gaslight Drive located in South Zanesville for a welfare check earlier this evening. After arriving officials found a man dead in his trailer. According to South Zanesville Fire Rescue Chief, Russell Taylor, the deceased man appeared to have fallen and was unable to get out of his home for help.
“Upon search of the house before removing him we located what appears to be a mortar round from what looks like World War II,” said Taylor.
Taylor said that the man was a veteran and had worked at the local veterans association.
“I guess he just collected old military stuff,” said Taylor. “There was a lot of different things found in the house, but this was the main concerning one and we just wanted to make sure everybody was safe in the community.”
The Columbus Bomb Squad will gather the mortar and deactivate it, off location. Once the bomb squad leaves and the scene is cleaned the evacuated citizens will be allowed back into their homes. The identity of the man cannot be released until his remaining relatives are informed.
