The Salvation Army is Preparing for the Cold Weather
One local organization is noticing an increase of visitors in their emergency shelter due to the recently cooler temperatures.
The Salvation Army is preparing for the cold weather by getting the message out about their emergency shelter. We spoke to Program Director, Dustin Redmond who tells us the purpose of the shelter is to help folks get back on their feet.
“The cold weather is coming we do want people to know the emergency shelter is here because, we don’t want them feeling like they have to be out under the bridge or at the railroad tracks we want them to know that the Salvation Army is here where they can come in and have a roof over their head. We supply three meals a day and we have different resources to where hopefully we can get them back on their feet.”
According to Redmond, the Salvation Army runs a 35 bed shelter, 16 of those beds are for males, another 6 are for females and they have two family dorms where each room can hold up to 6 to 7 people per family.
“In the summer people think well it’s warm you can just go sleep outside but, in the winter its crucial and I just think for myself if I had to sleep outside even if it’s as cold as it is outside now I would be miserable and I think that it’s a great feeling to know that the Salvation Army and the community helps us to provide shelter for the people who in need.”
If you or someone you know is in need of the emergency shelter, you can stop in at anytime of the night. If it is dark out, you will need to be escorted by a police officer.
