ZANESVILLE, Ohio- The Zanesville-Muskingum County Health Department is hosting their prescription drug drop off on Saturday October 22nd.

The event will conveniently be in the style of a drive-thru, in the parking lot of the health department in Zanesville. The event will take place from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. and is anonymous.

Captain Jeff LeCocq of the Muskingum County Sheriff’s Office explained that no information will be collected at the drop off. Any information that is on the prescription bottle will be removed, then the bottles will be recycled.

LeCocq explained how important it is to properly dispose of unused drugs.

“You don’t want them around a house where kids can get ahold of them and have an accidental overdose situation,” said LeCocq. “Or if you just put them in septic and sewage systems, then there’s always a fear that they’re going to leach back in to drinking water systems and cause problems that way.”

All prescription and over the counter medications such as liquids, pills and syringes will be collected.

If you can’t make it on Saturday, there are still other year round options.

“It’s the only day we have the mobile drive through, any day of the year at our jail facility on 4th Street, we do have a drop box where folks can come in and drop those off in a locked box and the DEA collects those ,” said LeCocq.

Illegal substances will not be accepted.
