Dresden Elementary holds mock election

DRESDEN, Ohio-Â Dresden Elementary School found a different way to educate their students on the election process.
The school held a mock election to give students the opportunity to experience the voting process firsthand.
Molly Orr, fifth and sixth grade social studies teacher, said the students have been talking about it all week.
“We’ve tired to simulate how it would look when they go to the polls to vote when they get older, so we’ve divided it into precincts just like they would see at the polls,” said Orr.
The students filled out voter registration cards and then had to sign into a registration book before they could vote. The younger grades, kindergarten through second, filled out a paper ballot while grades three through six used an electronic ballot.
“The third through sixth graders [voted] on the presidential election, along with the U.S. Senate race and one of our local county commissioner races,” said Orr.
Sixth graders also played a large role running the election. They prepared, set up and ran the polls.
“They’re very aware of who the candidates are and [were] very excited to participate and cast their vote,” said Orr.
