Local Church Sends Thousands of Healthy Meals to Liberia
Nearly 800 malnourished children will receive healthy meals soon through the efforts of one local church.
Rolling Plains United Methodist Church along with over 100 volunteers are packing approximately 65,000 meals to send to 8 different orphanages in Liberia.
Organizer Breanna Humphries said she got the idea in 2011 when she was doing an assignment for her economics class.
"I had to pick a country to write about and I picked Liberia knowing nothing about it and just kind of fell in love with the country as a whole. Because, they have such a large percentage of kids who are malnourished and undernourished and I wanted to do something about that," said Humphries.
This is their 2nd time packing meals. Humphries said the work is special to her because these meals are feeding the kids that she met during her recent visit to Liberia in 2014.
"These kids might get, they usually get like one rice based meal a day and then a chunk of bread for breakfast. So these meals are really nutrient dense. We took a couple of suit cases full when we went to Liberia and the kids faces just lit up like know other. So we are just so grateful for them," said Humphries.
The meals consist of soy protein, dehydrated vegetables and vitamins and minerals which is 75% of the nutrition that a child needs per day. They plan to ship the meals out by February 20th.
