Local Church Continues to Celebrate Black History Month
The male chorus at St. Paul AME Church kicked off the Black History Month festivities Sunday evening.
Sunday was the first day of the month long celebration of Black History Month presented by St. Paul AME Church. The ceremony began with a prayer from Associate Pastor Rev. Robert Palmer who said it’s important to remember the struggles in the black community.
"It’s still a struggle for us so we are trying to struggle for our children as they come along and are educated that they can be able to prosper, prosper in this world and in this country and all over the world by what we’re doing and trying to do now and did in the 60’s. That’s why we are keeping the struggle alive," said Rev. Palmer.
The history of Fredrick Douglas and Jesse Jackson was presented by two members of the youth ministry. And they said it’s important to them to celebrate important figures in African American history.
"There’s so many fallen people that no one goes over and we actually get a month to ourselves to talk about what had happened in history in our point of view." said Madi Hargraves.
"There’s people out there who don’t know the struggle that we’ve had. That don’t know how many racism there was after slavery was ended. How hard it still was for black people even when the shackles was off, even after the bondage was gone, it was still hard," said Kyle Johnson.
The next celebration will be on Valentine’s Day from 3 p.m until 4 p.m.
