CAMBRIDGE, Ohio- Fourth grade students at Cambridge Central Elementary received a unique opportunity Friday.

Southeastern Med recently purchased the Zenex germ-zapping robot. An official from Xenex and from the hospital showed the students how the robot worked. After the presentation and question and answer session, students were asked to come up with a name for the robot.

“We are really excited to be chosen to have our fourth graders chose a name,” Cambridge City Schools, Principal, Leslie Leppla said. “They’ve been studying a lot about cells, infections, and different things through science so this fits prefect.”

“We’re one of the cleanest hospitals rated in the State of Ohio already,” Southeastern Med, Infectious Prevention Director, Cathy McIntire said. “But we wanted to provide even more safety for our patients. We decided that this was the next step for us to provide that safety for our patients, our community, and our employees as well. It’s just one more layer of protection for our patients.”

There currently 15 of these robots in the State of Ohio. Within 5 minutes, it can completely sanitize a room through pulsating UV light. This robot retails for $100,000. Auxiliary coordinator, Rita Nolan said they were able to purchase the robot through community support and fundraising.

“We couldn’t do it without the community here around us,” Nolan said. “I just would like to thank them. This is a part of their gift. We decided this would be the best thing to put our money towards this year.”

The top three names will then be voted on by the employees at Southeastern Med. The student who name is selected will receive an award.
