CAMBRIDGE, Ohio- A local police department received a donation to ensure the safety of every member on their team.

Cambridge Police Department receives a one of a kind ballistic vest for their K9 unit, thanks to an organization called Spikes K9 Fund. Cambridge Police Lieutenant Karl Milam said protecting K9 officers is just as important as protecting human officers.

“The dog is with us more than a lot of our family members. It goes to work with us and then comes home with us, sleeps in our house, and everything. So over time there’s a major bond that’s developed plus all the hours of training and work. Different confrontations you’re involved in really develops a cohesive bond between you and your working dog. My last dog has saved my life on two occasions,” said Milam.

Spikes K9 Fund founder James Hatch said these vests are unique and made to fit each specific dog.

“In the past, the dogs didn’t really have much protection in the front. A dog is not going to come at you side ways. This vest here actually has a lot of protection in the front where the dog is going to be coming at you. Our police department probably wouldn’t be able to afford something like this. But due the generous donation from sponsors like Anderson Cooper, we are able to receive vest like this in this area,” said Milam.

Hatch said his goal is to help as many working dogs as he can. For more information, about Spikes K9 fund visit spikesk9fund.org.
