The Dickens Victorian Village in Cambridge
Interviewed by WHIZ reporter Gabe Hutton
A 20-year tradition continues in Cambridge, Ohio with the Dickens Victorian village.
If you walk through downtown Cambridge during November and December, you can’t miss the mannequins dressed in Victorian era style.
Each mannequin was designed by volunteers who had a purpose to their artwork, as each one can be seen with a description of the historical context behind the display..
These mannequins can be found around the clock all the way up and down Wheeling Avenue.
Julie Davey the administrator for Dickens Welcome Center stated,” well, they remind you of Christmas and hometown and all that because this is, a small little town and the air out all the time, and they’re all handmade. So, people appreciate what our volunteers do to contribute to this event. And it’s allowed that has allowed it to go for 20 years.”
Having the mannequins around town has brought more than just a festive spirit to the people of Cambridge, the display brings in tourism while featuring services like carriage rides, trolley tours, and Victorian style tea parties.
“Well, the whole idea came up to bring visitors to our downtown to support our small little retail stores. So that’s what it’s done. It brings people from all over. I know it’s hard to believe, but we get people from all over the United States that come into this town because we’ve been going for 20 years, and we try to have extra activities so that there’s something for everybody. Anytime you can bring people from all walks of life in, from all over the United States into your small little town, it’s a good thing,” Davey added.
If you want to see these special mannequins in Cambridg, they will be on display until January 1st. You can also visit the Dickens Victorian Village website for more information.
