ZANESVILLE, Ohio- You can expect to see more patrol units on Center Drive for the holiday season.

The increase of traffic due to shoppers on Maple Avenue has many people taking Center Drive as a shortcut.

After receiving a number of complaints, Chief Tony Coury with the Zanesville Police Department is responding by sending out extra patrol units.

“We received a number of complaints about the way people are driving, so just to ensure that people get to their destination safely we have a couple extra units up there working,” said Chief Coury.

Chief Coury said they’ll be enforcing red lights on Maple Avenue as well as monitoring speeding and stop signs on Center Drive. The residents are concerned about the aggressive driving with children playing and people walking pets.

Officer John McElhaney with the Zanesville Police Department said since there aren’t sidewalks it risks the safety of the people in the neighborhood.

“If we can have an increased presence, people will put that in the forefront of what they’re thinking about when they’re driving and it causes them to slow down and just pay a bit more attention,” said Officer McElhaney.

Zanesville Police Department has one goal.

“We’re trying to keep the community as safe as we can,” said Chief Coury.
